Philly.com finally launches mobile site November 18, 2009

The Web site for the Inquirer and Daily News, philly.com, recently launched its mobile Web site.

One would think media outlets in large markets — such as Philadelphia — would be ahead of the curve in mobile technology. However, as in many aspects of life, Philadelphia is trying. We’re one step closer with philly.com‘s mobile Web site.

Before the launch, mobile users viewed the regular Web site for the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News on mobile devices. While it’s fairly navigable on a computer’s Internet browser, philly.com was not so easy to navigate with an oversized finger.

As with many mobile sites, not everything found on the regular site is accessible on the mobile philly.com. For example, you cannot separate what appeared in the Inquirer or Daily News on the home page — you’ll find out by the article’s byline. But with larger links and quicker loading, it’s a welcome sacrifice for an easier way to get Philly news on the go.

Fox 29 is the only other local media outlet in the city to have a mobile site, though it’s bare and doesn’t offer links comparable to what you’d see on myfoxphilly.com. NBC10, however, does have a free iPhone application, the first of the market. But I still ask — where are the rest of Philly’s local news iPhone apps?

I appreciate the work of those at philly.com — I have no experience in creating mobile sites, let alone regular Web sites (hat tip to WordPress), and I’m sure much work goes into producing a mobile equivalent of a hefty Web site. Bare with them as they work out kinks, and I recommend following them on Twitter (@phillydotcom, @PhillyDailyNews, @PhillyInquirer) for continuing updates.

DeMentri, Booker, Russell will all be OK January 14, 2009

Angela Russell

Former CBS3 reporter Angela Russell got a new gig in Seattle not long after being dumped in Philly.

For good or for bad, some of our favorite on-air personalities will land on his or her respective feet after all.

VINCE DeMENTRI

The ousted NBC10 anchor, who allegedly fought and may have had an affair with co-anchor Lori Delgado, is heading back to his earlier days. WPRI in Providence, R.I., is accepting DeMentri back after he left the station for bigger and better things in the early 1990s. The Temple alum settled with NBC out of court for an undisclosed amount.

Of course, it’s a huge downgrade for DeMentri, going from the No. 4 market to No. 43. But perhaps he should be thankful for having a job in the first place.

BOOKER

Alycia Lane can rest easy. Her radio boyfriend, Chris Booker, who was fired from Q102 last year, has returned back to his alma mater, K-Rock 9.23 F, in New York City. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Booker never gave up his NYC apartment, which happens to be right across the street from K-Rock.

Booker was unexpectedly fired in May despite a popular radio show. His girl, Alycia, is from Long Island and began her television career there. Perhaps there will be an opening there sometime soon, so she, too, can get back to her roots.

ANGELA RUSSELL

My favorite, and perhaps the most deserved, soft landing goes to CBS3 alum Angela Russell. She, also, was unexpectedly axed earlier this month after KYW decided not to renew her contract. However, another station across the country noticed Russell’s talent. Instead of her 4 p.m. anchor job in Philly, she’s heading west to Seattle where she’ll be the lead anchor for KIRO, the CBS station there, at 5, 6 and 11 p.m.

Russell has always been one of my favorite anchors/reporters in the Philadelphia market, and perhaps one of the least controversial, so I’m very happy to see her with such a great opportunity. Gives me reason to move to No. 13 Seattle, despite the rain.

Broadcast journalism lives on.

DeMentri follows Lane, sues former station October 7, 2008

Vince DeMentri is pulling an Alycia Lane.

It seems the former anchor is preparing to sue his former station, NBC10, in addition to his former co-anchor Lori Delgado, the GM and a security officer named “Don.”

This happened on the same day that Delgado announced her resignation from NBC10.

Apparently, the suit claims the defendants committed libel and slander. Not sure where this came from.

And, DeMentri’s attorney is the infamous Paul Rosen — the same one representing Lane in her suit.

It never ends… Unfortunately. I miss credibility.

DeMentri bio yanked from Web site August 13, 2008

Hat tip to tom shannon on this previous post for some breaking Vince DeMentri news.

NBC10 has apparently pulled the plug on DeMentri’s bio on the Meet the News Team page (not the title of the page — “NBC Philadelphia, PA female and male news anchors.” Weird.).

If you try going directly to the link, NBC10 doesn’t let you.

The story you are trying to view is no longer available through this Web site.

What are we to assume here? Apparently NBC10 still doesn’t like to release information about their talent even after he or she is let go from the station (if that’s even the case) because Google News isn’t coming up with anything recent, either (as of Aug. 13).

In somewhat related news, larrymendte.com got somewhat of a facelift. I only get a link to e-mail — still no site, as was first reported by the DN. Anyone find a way around it?

Ed Note, 8/22/08: I’m going to toot my own horn (with great gratitude to tom shannon). We were one of (if not the) first ‘official’ source to break this news. Just sayin… ;)

NBC10 really likes to keep us guessing.

Vince DeMentri apparently met with station management on Thursday. It’s the first time he’s been in the studio in about a month.

And, of course, that’s all we know.

His photo and bio remain on NBC10′s Web site. So, I guess he’s still a paid employee?

It’s an interesting situation now. There’s really no pending legal action. And he allegedly didn’t do anything, at least says Lori Delgado, his apparent car-keyed victim. So…now what?

NBC will just keep us waiting, I suppose.

Philly TV newsers respond to Huggins’ death July 30, 2008

John Morrison did a great job in the DN writing a well-rounded profile of Edie Huggins, who died yesterday at 72.

He spoke to many anchors and reporters, from FOX’s Dawn Stensland to 6ABC’s Lisa Thomas-Laury.

Also quoted:

“We often use the word ‘pioneer’ loosely,” said Marc Howard, retired Channel 6 anchor. “But Edie truly was a pioneer. When she started in television, it was a collection of white males of no detectable ethnicity.

(Note the lack of mention of Channel 3, the station from which he permanently retired.)

And one more quote, from my newfound buddy:

Larry Kane, veteran broadcaster who worked with Edie at Channel 10, said that when he first saw her he was amazed at how she talked directly to the viewer.

“There are very few in this business who can make that electric contact. It was as though she was having a personal conversation with the viewer.

“She was very funny. Had a great sense of humor. She liked to tickle the big egos, bring them down to earth.”

Huggins’ impact on the lives of everyone — from family and friends to coworkers and viewers — has been clearly evident in the countless tributes in the past 24 hours. Undoubtedly, she will be greatly missed.

NBC10 reporter Edie Huggins, 72, dies July 29, 2008

Edie Huggins, the first African-American female anchor in the Philadelphia area, has died after a “lengthy illness,” NBC10 is reporting.

The anchor and reporter was diagnosed with terminal cancer in the past year. Known as “Ms. Edie” among her coworkers, Huggins was a pioneer in the Philadelphia area as the host of many magazine news shows and segments like “Huggins’ Heroes,” which profiled people who faced challenges with courage and determination.

Still listed on NBC10′s list of on-air talent, Huggins continued reporting for Channel 10 well after retirement age. She has marked 42 years of work at the station.

NBC10 donated most of the first block of its 6 p.m. newscast Tuesday to coverage and reaction of Huggins’ death.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 5, at Bright Hope Baptist Church at 12th Street and Cecil B. Moore Avenue. The service begin at 7 p.m. and are open to the public.

DeMentri likely gone, Mackintosh follows suit July 29, 2008

OK, here’s you’re real update on (former?) NBC10 anchor Vince DeMentri.

According to he who knows all of Philadelphia media (except the stuff Larry Mendte wasn’t feeding him), the hot-tempered anchor will likely not be seen on NBC10 any longer.

In a strange twist, however, his (former?) co-anchor Lori Delgado has denied DeMentri’s involvement in any of the alleged incidents — keying of the car, stealing of the hair drier, etc.

NBC10 also realizes that new criminal charges will be filed.

Hopping down seven channels, Wednesday is veteran reporter and Temple grad Robin Mackintosh‘s final day at CBS3.

He’s capping off nearly 38 years at the station to move to Avalon, N.J. with his wife. He’s the seventh on-air talent to leave the station in about a year.

Expect a link to a send-off on here tomorrow. Also, expect the reporter of his goodbye to be Pat Ciarrocchi. She’s a pro at that kind of stuff now, after Dick Standish and Tom Lamaine.

There is none. He’s still on the site but not on the newscasts. He’s probably laughing at you right now.

Vince DeMentri is in high demand. At least in the Internet world. Probably not the real world, I’d imagine.

So…here’s an update: there is none. NBC10 still hasn’t released anything about the future of its temperamental anchor as his bio remains on nbc10.com.

In keeping with an old post on a similar topic

Ryan Howard must have taken buddy Pat Burrell’s advice. With an unknown female companion, Mr. MVP 2006 was seen at Rouge on Rittenhouse Square partaking in a hamburger (allegedly, no cheese like the left fielder). He also consumed a cheese platter and a key lime martini.  Mmm.
