Philadelphia Police have confirmed shots fired at the intersection of 15th and Norris streets early Wednesday morning.

Lt. Quaiser of the Philadelphia Police Department confirmed at the scene that an 18-year-old female, a non-Temple student, was shot in the chest and taken to Temple Hospital. There is no word on the victim’s identity or condition.0514080209.jpg

Witnesses said as many as five shots were fired outside of a security kiosk by the turf field shortly before midnight Tuesday. The kiosk has bullet holes in it, and the security guard who was in the booth at the time is fine.

Temple Police said the victim was shot while standing in front of the security kiosk and talking to the guard on duty.

After the shots were fired, people in the area began screaming and huddling, witnesses said. Police closed access to Norris Street from Broad Street after the incident. The scene was mostly cleared by 2:10 a.m.

Police took about nine witnesses, including some Temple students, to Police Headquarters for statements. No suspects have been named at this time.

“My friends were walking home from 7-Eleven and the streets were blocked off. I came outside and the cops were everywhere,” junior journalism major Audra Neff-Williams said.

0514080150.jpg“I called Temple Police, trying to find out what happened, and they said they could not provide any information,” senior business major Mike Sweet said. “I think we have a right to know what’s going on. No TU-Alert was sent out.”

As of 2:10 a.m., no TU-Alert was sent by the university. Temple tested the system last Friday.

“I understand that cops won’t say anything at crime scenes, but Temple’s whole thing is the TU-Alert,” Sweet said. “I mean, they just tested it [a few] days ago.”

Facilities Management planned to board up the kiosk in the early morning. Temple Police said another security guard will be on duty at that location later today.

Remember when the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League debuted in 1943?

Regardless if you were born or not, you probably know little about it. Unless you’ve seen A League of Their Own.

But how much do you, in fact, know based on the flick? Former leaguer Doris Sams said the movie was “about 30 percent truth and 70 percent Hollywood.”

If you’re going to fabricate info, let’s just lie like God’s not watching.

She’s been compared to a monster and Rocky. High-ranking Democrats have called for her to quit the race. And the media have been ruthless in her campaign coverage, including commentary by The Temple News.

It seems that no matter what Sen. Hillary Clinton does, she’s under constant attack by the media. The other presidential candidates don’t have that pleasure.

She has said she needed it. Tonight, she got it.

Sen. Hillary Clinton won the much-hyped Pennsylvania primary Tuesday, the first election in the past six weeks of this election cycle.

“Some people counted me out and said to drop out, but the American people don’t quit, and they deserve a president who doesn’t quit, either,” Clinton said after it was announced that she was the projected winner.

With 99 percent of the precincts reporting, Clinton has a 10-point lead over Obama, 55 percent to 45 percent. Of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties, Obama only won seven, including Philadelphia, Delaware and Chester counties.

Clinton at the Bellevue

Posted by Chris Stover on April 22, 2008

My goal for today has been achieved, and now I’m at the Bellevue Hotel in Center City Philadelphia.

CNN, which is being projected on the walls of the ballroom the press is shoved into, just aired a countdown to the close of the polls, and a Times-Squaresque scene occurred with the few Hillary supporters currently in the room. Cheers emerged as the countdown neared zero.

The latest exit polls showed Clinton had a 16-point lead over Obama throughout the state, 58 percent to 42 percent.

The music just started at the Bellevue as the mood shifts from anxiously waiting to cautiously partying. Fellow political reporter LeAnne Matlach and I will be posting articles on temple-news.com following the results of the night, whenever they may come. Stay tuned.

Cut to the Chase Blooper: Teleprompters are hard to read

Posted by Chris Stover on April 22, 2008

Cut to the Chase is the name of my column for the Temple Living section of The Temple News from September 2007 to May 2008.  It’s a pop culture/entertainment discussion.  On broadandcecil.com, I began posting news bloopers I found on YouTube… because really, what’s more fun than news bloopers?

Here’s the latest involving a Fox News anchor.  We’ll see Shepard Smith at the end, who had his own issues on air.
