Tweeting away April 29, 2009

All in all, I’m still not a huge fan of Twitter.
What’s the point of a continuous Facebook status update? I’m still not sure. But I’m slowly beginning to become addicted.
Look for me under theREALcbs. (Apparently, case sensitivity matters). Have to give credit for the name to Dave Isaac.
I vow not to become the obsessed, all-I-do-is-tweet nerd, for I just don’t have enough time in life (yet). But follow me on Twitter, and I’ll follow you.
The above line made me think of this completely unrelated song (sorry for the source from which it’s coming):

At a time of change and excitement for the Tyler School of Art, its interim dean announced her resignation.
Therese Dolan, the interim dean of Tyler, made the announcement Thursday. Her resignation will be effective June 30. Dolan assumed the position in January 2008.
“We are extremely grateful to Terry Dolan and wish her well as she returns to the faculty,” said Lisa Staiano-Coico, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, in an e-mail interview. “She is a respected art historian and a beloved teacher.”

I’ve been honored this week with rankings from two very reputable sources in the world of journalism.
First, the college syndicate UWIRE named me one of the top 100 college journalists in the country. I’m proud to be following in the footsteps of respected TTN alumni Christopher Wink and Sean Blanda, both of whom made the inaugural list last year.
And today, an amazingly awesome blog known as the Cherry and What? named me the third most influential person on Temple’s campus. The C&W crew dug the old Cut to the Chase headshot out of the TTN archives, but I won’t hold it against them. Thanks to the C&W.
Seriously — add the award-winning Cherry and What? to your favorites and RSS feed. Definitely an entertaining read.

A sick 2-year-old has health officials wondering if swine flu, the latest nationwide epidemic, could be in Philadelphia.
The boy was sick at the end of March, long before the flu was known to break out, but officials are waiting on test results to confirm it. As of now, the child is no longer ill.
There are approximately 90 cases of swine flu in 10 states.
One of those states is Delaware. Students at the University of Delaware wore masks today after news broke that as many as 10 students are infected with the virus.

Posts have been sporadic here on chris-stover.com. But as the semester winds down, the posts will increase.
Some updates since the last post:
- Ten job applications have been sent out to TV stations across the country. About 25 more on the way — for the first round.
- Graduation is quickly approaching on May 14, 2009, at 10 p.m. Who’s counting?
- As of now, there are two issues of The Temple News remaining. We’re going out on top (without videos, of course — we’re working on it).
- I’ve been named to the UWIRE100, a compilation of the top 100 college journalists in the country.
- I caught a mouse, whom I affectionately named Gerald, in my apartment — the first and only critter to date.
Stay tuned. More to come shortly.

Shannon McDonald stands by the 22nd Police District headquarters. A story she wrote on an officer recently garnered media attention (Julia Wilkinson/TTN).
Shannon McDonald thought a ride-along with a Philadelphia Police officer would make a good story for her capstone journalism class.
Though she received an ‘A’ on the report, she is now embroiled in a controversy that might not have been worth the grade.
“I just wanted to get some crime specifics and information on [the neighborhood] and … to see how the officer interacts with the community,” said McDonald, a senior magazine journalism major and managing editor of The Temple News.
McDonald wrote the article, titled “Black and Blue,” for the Multimedia Urban Reporting Lab, the capstone course for journalism seniors. The article was published to MURL’s Web site in early February.
In it, she quotes Officer William Thrasher, 24, as using derogatory terms and expletives in describing the district he patrols, which has a large African-American population.
“These people are f—— disgusting,” Thrasher reportedly said per McDonald’s article. “It’s like they’re animals.”

Rutgers University had a clever idea. It’s really quite a simple task when you think about it.
Why not gather a world-record number of Waldos in one room?
So… they did.
Rutgers gathered 1,052 Waldo characters, based off the Where’s Waldo book series — good enough for the Guiness Book of World Records. In the end, it was also for a good cause. The lookalikes collected 3,186 children’s books for public libraries in New Brunswick, N.J.
Philly partnership with KFC? April 4, 2009

I hope so.
As a promotional campaign, KFC is offering to fix the country’s potholes for free. Not a bad deal.
In exchange, KFC will simply put a logo over the patch — “Re-Freshed by KFC.”
From car drivers to SEPTA bus operators, I think many Philadelphians would be happy to see some more Colonel Sanders on the streets.
