Mendte gets six months’ house arrest November 24, 2008

Former CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte received six months’ house arrest, among other punishments, for hacking into the e-mail account of former co-anchor Alycia Lane. His other punishments include:
- $5,000 fine
- 250 hours of community service
- Three years’ probation
- Filtering device on computer
- No contact with Lane
Here’s Mendte’s version of the story.
The sentencing comes nearly one year after the entire Lane-Mendte debacle began unfolding at CBS3. Lane was arrested in New York City in mid-December for allegedly punching a cop. She was subsequently released from her contract. In May, Mendte’s computers were confiscated after an FBI probe into the hacking accusation; he accessed Lane’s e-mails more than 500 times since January.
Both Mendte and his wife, Fox29 anchor Dawn Stensland, directly addressed Lane at the sentencing hearing today, apologizing for his actions. Check out all the local coverage below:

While browsing cbs3.com, I was proud to see my alma mater’s football team featured on the Sunday Kickoff — with intro remarks from Coach Ricci. Beasley Reece gave a lesson in tackling and had excellent advice for members of the football team.

…so she can do all these interviews!
I never wrote much about Sarah Palin this election cycle (save the Tina Fey postings). But maybe not winning the vice presidency was the best thing to happen to her.
According to this article from the AP, Palin has numerous offers — interviews, book deals, even hosting a TV show — from multiple companies. Must be nice.
Now, the Alaska governor isn’t allowed to have employment with compensation outside of the governor’s office, so is all this stuff considered employment?
God, I hope not.
One, I’d love to see her on Letterman. I think that would be excellent for all parties involved. Second, Elizabeth Hasselbeck needs some help on The View, and she’d make an excellent addition. And I’d love to read the propaganda that would be her autobiography (in my opinion, to be released a year and a half prior to her 2012 presidential bid).
But there are two sides to the story here. The second thing I considered when reading this article is the Anchorage reporter for the Associated Press. My gosh, this person must be living on cloud nine by now.
At first, what happened in Alaska? And now, they have a pseudo-celebrity garnering international attention living in a state of 500,000! And this reporter, who once covered snowfall (I made that up), now gets to cover it all.
Maybe Alaska isn’t all that far-fetched for that first job…
‘Naked Priest’ sentenced November 22, 2008

Back in June, I was fortunate enough to post about the catholic priest arrested for jogging naked in Colorado at 4:30 in the morning.
I now have the pleasure of following up with this story.
Thanks to my obsession with cbs3.com, I found that our friend, Fr. Robert Whipkey, has been sentenced to five years’ probation.
He has to register as a sex offender. He’s no longer permitted to preach. And he’s having trouble looking for work.
All for running naked around a high school track in the early hours of the morning.
No reason has been given for the naked jog. I’m not so sure one is needed.
Larry Mendte viewing party? November 20, 2008

I’m thinking of hosting a party on Monday.
For one, it’s my one and only week off from The Temple News this semester. But more importantly…
It’s the day of Larry Mendte’s sentencing!
Odds are he’ll receive a fine, probation and some community service — the six-month jail sentence is unlikely — for hacking into Alycia Lane’s e-mail account. But this whole thing is actually nearing an end (or, at least, so we think…).
Any bets?
Google made a mistake! November 19, 2008

Believe it or not, Google is not infallible.
I was searching the name of a murder suspect from Glen Mills and decided to Google Map his address. I was trying to find out how close he was to Garnet Valley High School, and instead I found Foulk Road, a popular arterial in Bethel Township.
You may notice, Google needs some spell check. And should the image be too small, take my word for it.
What’s worse — the correct spelling of the name is right next to the incorrect.
I’m just glad I could find something wrong with Google.

Anchors aboard at CBS3 November 16, 2008

It’s only fitting that my 200th post is about my favorite topic.
Lost happened this week over at CBS3. First, Chris May, after filling in for the overboard Larry Mendte since June, has been officially promoted by CBS3 management, according to this press release. It took covering two political conventions to achieve this honor.
Also, ousted Fox29 anchor Dave Huddleston has joined CBS3 as a weekend anchor, according to gossiper Dan Gross. This was originally the position given to Chris May before he took over Marc Howard’s spot at 4. Hmm…
In related news, odds are I’ll be interning at Huddleston’s old stomping grounds come the spring. Looking forward!
And just because I like trying new things, let’s try this new polling feature from WordPress…

I look forward to this moment every year.
I was watching my morning cooking shows when the commercial that is the holiday season came on. It’s the first time I’ve seen it this season, and it truly signifies the start of something good. It’s a classic, and it’s for your enjoyment below.
I guess it’s time to say it — Happy Holidays!
Total Finale Live… Finally. November 15, 2008

Remember Total Request Live? And Carson Daly? And how the show got cancelled? I thought I did, too, but it’s still on. Until tomorrow.
TRL is having its Total Finale Live tomorrow at 8 p.m. And guess who the host is…
It’s only fitting that Carson Daly is being brought back to host the final TRL ever. It’s funny — it seems TRL has been on so much longer than 10 years, but it’s safe to say it was doomed for failure once Daly left to attempt to be a late-night host.
Should be fun and star-filled. I’ll be watching.
Trivia: Britney Spears’ second hit single, “Sometimes,” was the first video to make its world premier on TRL. And I didn’t even have to look that up. I was in sixth grade.
